Churches and fortresses
(Akhmeta, 170 km from Tbilisi) The first church on this place was built in 6th century AD by one of the 13 Saint Assyrian Fathers, who established the traditions of monastery life in Georgia. The current building has been constructed in 11th century and, along with Svetitskhoveli and BagratiTemple, is considered the symbol of integrity of Georgia. In the late medievalsAlaverdi was the Episcopal temple. The ruins of bathes can be observed on the territory of complex, central building of which is Saint George cross-domed temple; here also is marani (wine cellar), which was recently rehabilitated and is functioning currently. Annually the Alaverdoba is hallowed here not only by Christians, but also by the neighbouring Muslim population.
(Ambrolauri, 221 km fromTbilisi) Cross-domed church of the 14th century; it is located in one of the most beautiful regions of Georgia – Racha. The church is surrounded by the fascinating nature; the façades are adorned by the rarest carvings. The medieval paintings can still be observed on the walls.
(Dusheti, 70 km from Tbilisi) Fortress on Georgian Military Way. It was built in the 17th century representing the residence of AragviEristavis (rulers) then. The complex unites two churches and observation tower. The western façade is adorned with the remarkable carving. In the 80-ies of the 20th century the reservoir has been constructed near the fortress, and it adds the beauty to the surrounding landscape.
(150 km from Tbilisi) Village of towers located in on of the mountain regions of Eastern Georgia – Khevsureti, in River Arghuni gorge. The towers are dating back to the 9th century and are still preserved in the initial state.
Gergetis Sameba
(Stepantsminda, 157 km from Tbilisi) Gergetis Sameba is the only cross-domed church in the region (Khevi); it was built in the 14th century. The church is located on the elevation and opens the fascinating view on Stepantsminda settlement and MkinvariPeak in the sunny and cloudless weather.
