Mountains are one of the most important and beautiful part of the nature in Georgia. Mountains of the Great Caucasus which make a natural border of the country in the north are divided into 5 different regions. Nature, people and their traditions also differ from each other and from other parts of Georgia as well. Mountains are considered to be the most sacred places, where the traditions are preserved at a full scale. Here you can find the really true Georgia and true relationships between the people. Mountainous regions of Georgia are: Svaneti and Racha in the West, Khevi, Khevsureti, and Tusheti in the East. Hiking tourism is very well developed offering hundreds of routs to the tourists. In Georgia one can easily organize hiking and jeep tours, as well as horse riding trips. Routs differ in their nature and difficulty: some of them are very short and good enough for half or one day tours, some of them can be used for the two week trips. During two week tours tourists can visit all mountain regions of Georgia and explore beauty of all the regions step by step. From all these regions Svaneti and Khevi are the most developed ones from the touristic point of view. Visiting period in the mountains starts from the beginning of May and lasts till the end of October. However some regions like Tusheti and Khevsureti are accessible just from June till mid September. Similar tours can be arranged in the Lesser Caucasus as well. As mentioned, most of these places except for the ski resorts are not accessible during the winter months because of the high snowfalls.
